Hawthorne Responds to IDOA Cuts

6 Illinois Stakes races at Hawthorne this Spring to be $50,000 added

The following announcement was made on the Hawthorne overnight sheet:

Due to budget cuts by The State of Illinois, all 6 Illinois Stakes will no longer include $25,000 for Illinois Conceived and Foaled. Purses for the 6 Illinois Stakes will now be $50,000 added.

Attached is a copy of a March 17, 2015 letter sent by the Illinois Department of Agriculture to Hawthorne Racecourse (each racetrack received a similar letter) announcing the suspension of grant monies to the tracks for Illinois restricted races and owners awards for Illinois horses running in open races.

Those 6 races, The Third Chance, The Robert S. Molaro, The Pretty Jenny, The Land of Lincoln, The Peach of It and The Milwaukee Avenue Handicaps were originally scheduled as $75,000 added races with $25,000 coming from the purse account and an additional $25,000 or $50,000 (for foals or breds) coming from the Illinois Department of Agriculture. Those races were worth $50,000 for Illinois foaled and $75,000 for Illinois conceived and foaled.  As a result of the suspension of State funding, which would leave these races with $25,000 purses, Hawthorne has increased the base purse of these races to $50,000.

Hawthorne is continuing the usual payment of Illinois owner awards in affected open company races for the rest of the Spring Meeting despite the lack of reimbursement from the State.
